A Limiting Belief is a thought or pattern of thinking that a person holds onto so tightly they actually believe it’s true.
Problem is, it can be hard to know exactly what our Limiting Beliefs are. After all, they’re beliefs, so chances are we’ve pretty dang convinced of them!
Here are 3 prompts to help you uncover (and then replace) your own Limiting Beliefs.
1. Get it all out there
Start by getting a notebook or piece of paper. (I highly recommend doing this exercise by hand, since studies show that there’s a strong link between handwriting and memory.) Then, list a few general topics, such as:
Money, Relationships, Work, Family, Friends, Success, Commitment
If you think of other topics, by all means, include those on your list!
Then, under each subject, write the words, “I believe that money…” and complete the sentence as honestly as you can.
Example: “I believe that money can help me acheieve my goals.”
2. listen to yourself
Pay attention to your inner dialogue (or things you say out loud to your friends) for a one-week period. Make a note every time you become aware of belief-based thinking, and then write that exact thought down.
Example: “This economy is terrible. Good thing I’ve got a secure job – I’ll never find another one.”
Tip: You might need to create a note file in your phone for this prompt since you probably won’t have a notebook & pen handy.
3. Listen to others
Make a list of people in your life (including influencers and celebrities you follow on social media) whose way of thinking harmonizes with your own. Then, list the ideals or standards they hold to that resonate with you.
Example: The Bucket List Family – they believe travel and spending time with their kids while they’re young is really important, as do I.
Once you’ve done one or all of the exercise above, you should have solid material to work with. Remember, these prompts are designed to help you get in touch with your beliefs, so don’t expect all of them to be limiting. In fact there’s a good chance that most of them won’t be!
If you notice that a few things you’ve written down make you feel anxious or negative, you may have uncovered some beliefs that are holding you hostage.
But don’t worry! In an upcoming video, I’ll show you to overcome them.
